Committee Profile

After the ravages of a pandemic and confronting the ever looming crisis of rapid climate change, it’s clear that the infrastructures of the world’s largest population hubs are in need of new energy: we’re looking at you delegates.

UNHabitat is concerned with equitable and sustainable development in cities around the world. Solutions are aimed at creating policy addressing issues in human settlements to reduce poverty, respond to climate issues and disasters, and create opportunities and prosperity across the globe. Debate in this committee will specifically focus on securing coastal cities in the face of rising sea levels and increasing mobility and transportation in developing cities. Coastal cities support world economies and record numbers of citizens, and transportation access is crucial for inclusive, transformative development. Delegates will need to ensure that at risk communities are supported while pushing all cities into a more sustainable, prosperous future. This is an opportunity for collaboration on creative solutions, utilizing technology while respecting the history of the people within. 68% of the world’s population is projected to live in cities by 2050, and delegates will need to work together on how to bridge divides of accessibility while keeping our eyes on the horizon: what will the future of our world look like?

Chair Letter

Dear Delegates,

My name is Emma Riedel, and I will be serving as your chair for the Novice United Nations Habitat committee at BruinMUN XXXIII. I’m looking forward to getting to meet you all and I’m going to do my best to make this a fun and informative experience!

I am a third-year studying Anthropology and Political Science and minoring in Education Studies. I love traveling, cooking, exploring LA, music, and spending time with my friends. I also work as a Bruin Ambassador on campus and I hope to go into education policy after university. My interest in policy and government and in leadership pulled me to staffing Model UN conferences while at UCLA!

I joined Model UN my freshman year of high school where I got the chance to travel several times for conferences and become close with our team. Traveling to colleges I realized that I loved the organization of the conferences and wanted to be like the students who ran our committees! I traveled and debated in high school but once I came to college, I knew I wanted to staff. I still keep in touch with my friends on MUN teams at other schools and am privileged to have found this club at UCLA and serve on your BruinMUN senior staff.

This committee is going to be covering various concerns within the development of sustainable, healthy communities around the globe. We will explore how cities should adapt to pandemics to continually foster community health and how to support and protect coastal cities in light of climate change and rising sea levels. Debate will be lively and I have faith in all of your abilities to be cooperative and creative in drafting solutions. That being said, I remember what it’s like to be in high school and new to Model UN so if you have any questions at all, please do not hesitate to reach out–that’s why I’m here!

Best,

Emma Riedel
