Committee Profile

During this conference, the International Labor Organization (ILO), which was founded in 1919, will be discussing two pertinent topics regarding labor. Firstly, delegates will address the recent buzz surrounding athletes and their push for stronger worker protections. Solutions may range from modifying playing schedules to implementing new safety protocols in order to appease athletes. It is important to remember, however, that large leagues often oppose these reforms, signifying that significant compromises must come from all sides. In the second topic, delegates will discuss the presence of human rights’ abuses on migrant workers during the lead up to many mega-events, like the Olympics and FIFA World Cup. Solutions in this topic may range from establishing new grievance mechanisms for migrants to increasing independent oversight of labor practices.

In both of these topics, it is crucial for delegates to understand the delicate balance between sovereignty and oversight in order to create long-lasting and feasible solutions.

Chair Letter

Dear Delegates,

Thank you all for coming to BruinMUN 33. My name is Rohan Ghosh Choudhuri and I am a fourth-year Physiological Science major who is also on the pre-med track. I am looking forward to being your chair for the ILO committee this year.

Coming from the Los Angeles area, I first joined Model UN in 9th grade and have loved the social element of it ever since. To me, Model UN is the perfect combination of learning about pertinent world issues while also learning how to most effectively work with others. As your chair, I hope to garner a captivating debate environment filled with productive conversations

Outside of Model UN, I love paying attention to any and all sports and am an avid twitter microinfluencer. I also love playing soccer, listening to music (Frank Ocean), exploring areas around Westwood, and thrifting. I am also involved with tutoring and enjoy teaching math (LASEO) and SexEd (REACH) to middle and high schoolers. As a pre-med student, I volunteer at the UCLA Medical Center and eventually hope to become an Orthopedic Surgeon with a focus in sports medicine.

In this committee, we will focus on two extremely pertinent issues. Delegates will dive into a complicated world involving preserving the labor rights of professional athletes, who often face tormenting schedules, and preventing the exploitation of migrant workers during mega events, like the Olympics or World Cup. Given the relevance of these topics to current world issues, I am excited to see how all of you tackle this challenge.

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to reach out to me at ilo@bruinmun.org.

Sincerely,

Rohan Ghosh Choudhuri | Chair | BruinMUN 33
