Committee Summary
The International Labour Organization (ILO) is the United Nations’ first specialized agency; in fact, the organization actually predates the UN! Uniting governments, employers and workers through its unique tripartite framework, the ILO and its 187 member states work towards achieving lasting, global peace through social justice.
In committee, delegates will face some of the most urgent questions shaping the future of work.
Billions of people’s livelihoods hang in the balance, from the factory floor to the fields or from the formal contracts to the informal hustles. While discussing the safety and health standards in the workplace, delegates will have to invent creative solutions to modern day psychosocial risks and the ever changing workplace environment. Once they invent such solutions, they will need to use their problem solving skills to ensure the implementation of the newfound regulations. Delegates will tackle the task of bringing the large portion of the work force operating in the informal economy into the formal sector. This will require extreme tact and compromise to ensure that social protection is increased and the path from informal to formal doesn’t simply punish the world’s most vulnerable earners. Through discussion, innovation, and perseverance delegates will create policy that has a global and lasting effect for generations to come.
MEET THE CHAIR
Jazmine Kaiwai
Dear Delegates,
My name is Jazmine Kaiwai (she/her) and I will be your Chair for the International Labour Organization (ILO) committee! I am a sophomore double majoring in Global Studies and Political Science, and I plan to go to law school post grad to potentially practice international human rights law, although I’m still figuring out what that may look like.
I’m from Ojai California, a small town about an hour and a half away from campus. I love being outdoors whether it's camping, hiking, swimming, riding horses, skiing, or just sitting at the beach. I enjoy playing volleyball and played all four years of high school. While I was born in Santa Cruz California, I lived in New Zealand for three years from ages one to four and then Bolivia for six years after that, which is where I learned how to speak Spanish. I really love traveling and I just spent my summer in Europe being an au pair in the South of France and then traveling around a bit. I’m also always down to get a matcha, sweet treat, or, my favorite, a savory snack! This is my first time chairing, and I had not previously been involved with MUN until my freshman year of college when I staffed BruinMUN and LAMUN and had so much fun!
As someone considering a potential career in human rights, I am so excited to be chairing this committee as I truly believe that it has tremendously important responsibilities. Interestingly enough, our committee, which was established under the Treaty of Versailles, actually predates the United Nations and was founded with the goal of achieving universal, lasting peace through social justice. To do this, ILO brings together governments, employers, and workers to ensure that everyone's voice is heard and to produce widely supported global policies.
In committee, we will be focusing on two topics: Setting Safety and Health Standards within the Workplace and Transitioning from the Formal to Informal Economy. I’m excited to see what innovative solutions you bring to the committee and hope that through your research and competition you not only learn more about international labor standards but gain an appreciation for all of the working rights we have today and what it entailed for us to get them! Even though I’ve only been involved in MUN one year, I have thoroughly enjoyed it and hope to continue my involvement, perhaps even competing myself this coming year. I hope you all have as much fun participating as I have had planning, I look forward to meeting you all!
