Committee Summary
As the First Committee of the UN’s General Assembly, DISEC will tackle the complexities behind maintaining a very modern and forward-thinking global peace. While you will certainly champion the policies of your nation, your true challenge lies in driving international collaboration for global security, unique to the character of DISEC—after all, DISEC is one of the UN’s most consequential assemblies.
The emphasis on collaboration between delegates and their security-focused solutions is paramount.
There are quite a few defining agenda items of modern global security: today, delegates may explore cybersecurity and its related threats; they may navigate the murky waters of digital warfare and cyber espionage; or they could embrace space as the next geopolitical frontier. Large companies are now contracted to provide secure cloud services and AI for classified use. Established space hubs in French Guiana and America now meet growing programs in India and South Korea. Evidently, the security landscape is evolving—and with growth in AI/ML (and technology in general), it’s evolving faster than ever.
Yet, the goal of DISEC remains the same; how you harness this rapidly shifting landscape to safeguard global security is entirely in your hands.
MEET THE CHAIR
ANEESH RATNALA
Dear Delegates,
Welcome to BruinMUN! I’m Aneesh Ratnala, and I’m delighted to be your chair for the First Committee (DISEC) at BruinMUN 34. I’m originally from Andover, Massachusetts, and I’m currently a third-year computer science major at UCLA. Outside of Model UN & coursework, I organize UCLA’s hackathon, enjoy learning languages, and like to play pickleball.
I picked up Model UN as a delegate in 2020, when I was a freshman in high school. My first committee, a World Health Organization general assembly at Tufts University, was the first time I saw the satisfaction behind trading ideas in real time, giving speeches impromptu, creating solutions on the fly, and meeting people who were just as curious as I was. I hope that, in DISEC, you’ll ultimately feel that way, too.
DISEC—the Disarmament and International Security Committee—is a Model UN classic, and I’m beyond eager to bring it to you. Our topics are broad yet directed, historic yet deeply modern; as delegates, you’ll engineer resilient solutions for international security as you debate within one of the foundational committees of the United Nations General Assembly. I am very excited to see what you come up with!
Whether this is your first Model UN conference or one of your last, I want you to feel intellectually challenged when you debate in DISEC. Of utmost importance, I hope you’ll enjoy your time in committee and leave UCLA having met new people and discussed new ideas.
See you in November!
