Committee Profile
Welcome to the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (also known as UN Women). This committee prides itself on being the global leader on gender equality. By addressing topics relevant to the livelihood of women everywhere, UN Women’s programmes and policies strive to make the world a safer place for all girls and women, providing them with the best life possible. With initiatives ranging from governmental intervention to humanitarian aid, this committee explores a wide array of solutions and addresses the varied challenges faced by different regions of the world.
At BruinMUN, UN Women will discuss the state of migrant workers as well as women’s health and reproductive rights. Both of these discussions are deeply rooted in wider political and social issues. Delegates will need to acquire a concrete understanding of their nation’s culture, history, and policies in order to propose solutions that are not only realistic, but also inclusive and original.
This committee and the issues it aims to address are incredibly relevant and a fantastic opportunity for delegates to think about the many ways in which an increase in women’s welfare can lead to a better world for all!
Chair Letter
Hello Delegates!
I am so excited to welcome you all to BruinMUN 33! My name is Chania Rene-Corail, and I will serve as your chair for the Novice UN Women committee. I am a second year International Development Studies and Political Science major. After college, I hope to go into international and human rights advocacy. Outside of school, I am somewhat of a theatre kid and I absolutely adore writing and directing new plays!
I started Model UN in high school, with my first seven conferences taking place over Zoom. Despite this setback, I fell in love with all aspects of MUN, and decided to stick with the activity. Over my four years of high school MUN, I met some of my best friends, and was able to introduce younger students to the activity by serving as president of my club. Trying out for the UCLA team was one of the first things I did this school year. From attending other universities’ conferences to staffing UCLA’s very own BruinMUN and LAMUN, I now truly feel that I have found my place within the MUN community, and I am so thrilled that you all now have the opportunity to do so as well!
What makes UN Women so exciting is that, as a general assembly committee, it enables you to discuss relevant real-world issues. I hope that your experience at BruinMUN will expand your worldview and make you all the more interested in the many important global events occurring around you. I am looking forward to hearing new and original ideas that represent the best interests of a variety of nations while also striving to improve the lives of women around the globe. I also carry the hope that BruinMUN will be an opportunity for personal growth, whether that be in your public speaking skills, your ability to work with others, or perhaps even in your research and writing abilities.
As this is a novice committee, I expect that many of you will have questions. Please feel free to reach out at any point before the conference. I look forward to meeting you all!
Best,
Chania
