Committee Summary
Since its establishment in 2006, the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) has strived to achieve its ultimate goal: protecting and promoting human rights around the globe. Whether it is by adopting resolutions, forming investigative panels, creating commissions of inquiry, or exercising its unique power of Universal Periodic Review, UNHRC Member States confront some of the world’s most pressing human rights-related issues.
At BruinMUN 34, the UNHRC committee will discuss two topics situated at the forefront of human rights, migration, and technology:
In Topic A, delegates will work to protect refugees and asylum seekers in migration systems. All individuals, no matter which country they are migrating to or from, deserve complete respect for their human rights and dignity. In Topic B, delegates will strive to safeguard the right to work within an automated global economy. Artificial intelligence and emerging technologies have shown significant economic potential; however, they also raise concerns about depriving individuals of employment opportunities and confining their right to work.
By addressing these two topics, delegates will tackle complex issues and develop innovative solutions that secure individuals’ human rights in our increasingly interconnected and technologically advanced world.
MEET THE CHAIR
LINDSAY ALVAREZ
Hi, Delegates!
My name is Lindsay Alvarez and I am so excited to be your Chair for UNHRC at BruinMUN 2026! I am currently a fourth-year student at UCLA majoring in Human Biology and Society. I am also on the pre-medical track, so outside of MUN, you can often find me spending time in my research labs or volunteering at the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center. In my free time, I love photography, attending UCLA sports games, listening to Lizzy McAlpine, and exploring areas around Los Angeles or my hometown of Huntington Beach!
My MUN journey ultimately began in my freshman year of high school, where I developed public speaking and leadership skills all while learning more about pressing global issues. Throughout high school, I had the opportunity to compete at various MUN conferences and I really enjoyed how I could meet and interact with so many people through the program. I knew that I wanted to keep being involved in MUN once I got to college, so I joined MUN at UCLA and have enjoyed it ever since. BruinMUN itself holds a special place in my heart as this marks my sixth consecutive year participating in the conference! I competed at BruinMUN for two years in high school as a delegate, dais staffed in my first year of college, and have chaired a committee for the last three years.
The United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) is the primary United Nations committee that focuses on issues related to human rights. The central goal of UNHRC is to protect and promote human rights on a global scale, as well as address and create recommendations in situations where human rights have been violated. Founded in 2006, UNHRC works to address a variety of human rights-related issues, whether that includes civil, economic, political, social, or cultural rights. UNHRC’s 47 Member States convene for regular sessions to discuss human rights topics, special sessions to address urgent or thematic issues, and intersessional activities such as seminars, panels, and forums. A unique aspect of UNHRC is its Universal Periodic Review, which grants UNHRC the ability to periodically examine the human rights records of all United Nations Member States.
In this committee, delegates will be tasked with researching the committee’s agenda topics, discussing potential solutions, and collaborating with other delegates to create a detailed draft resolution. At BruinMUN, I hope that each delegate not only learns more about these important human rights topics, but also grows in their research and collaborative skills. Please feel free to reach out to me through email if you have any questions. See you in November!
Best,
Lindsay Alvarez | Chair, UNHRC | BruinMUN 34
