Committee Profile

The Social, Humanitarian, and Cultural Committee (SOCHUM) is dedicated to advancing human rights and addressing injustices faced by marginalized communities across the globe. This year, SOCHUM will examine two critical issues: the displacement of workers due to exploitative labor systems and the persistent inequities in healthcare access for Indigenous populations. This committee will examine the systemic conditions that lead to forced displacement, such as unsafe working environments, lack of legal protections, and corporate negligence. SOCHUM will explore ways to ensure ethical labor practices and support displaced individuals. In addressing healthcare disparities, this committee will investigate the barriers Indigenous communities face, including geographic isolation, systemic discrimination, and underinvestment in culturally competent care. We’ll work to design frameworks that ensure health equity while respecting Indigenous sovereignty and traditional practices. Joining SOCHUM provides a unique learning opportunity to engage deeply with humanitarian challenges that demand thoughtful solutions. Through collaboration and diplomacy, you all will strengthen your understanding of global social justice and contribute to shaping policies that uphold dignity, equity, and human rights for all.

Welcome to SOCHUM!

Chair Letter

Hello Delegates!

My name is Ashima Bhatia, and I am beyond excited to serve as your Chair for SOCHUM at BruinMUN 33. I’m a second-year student majoring in Biology and following the well-worn path of the pre-med track (yes, I’ve accepted that my sleep schedule may never recover). Outside of academics, you can find me exploring new coffee shops across LA, shopping for things I don’t need by definitely want, or experimenting with new recipes in the kitchen.

My MUN journey began five years ago as a freshman in high school who had no idea what a position paper was. BruinMUN was actually one of the first conferences I ever competed in, and it quickly became my favorite. I continued competing all four years of high school and had the chance to staff this exact committee last year—so this marks my sixth time being part of this amazing conference! From nervously raising my placard to now helping behind the scenes, MUN has shaped the way I speak, think, and lead. Now, I’m honored to help create the same kind of transformative experience for you all.

SOCHUM is a committee that dives into the heart of society: its values, its struggles, and its future. As delegates, you’ll tackle some of the most pressing human rights and social justice issues of our time. You’ll be challenged to think critically and advocate for real-world solutions to complex global problems.

I’m so thrilled to see what you all bring to committee. Whether this is your first conference or your fifteenth, I hope you leave this weekend feeling inspired and proud of the work you’ve done.

If you have any questions, feel free to reach out!

All the best,

Ashima Bhatia | Chair, SOCHUM | BruinMUN 33
