Committee Summary
Regional cooperation has never been more vital to the Asia-Pacific. As the region's global influence continues to grow and transnational challenges become increasingly interconnected, the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) serves as a pivotal forum for member states to advance sustainable development, establish capacity-building initiatives, and develop innovative solutions to regional issues.
Throughout the conference, delegates will confront two pressing challenges that continue to shape the future of the Asia-Pacific.
Topic A: Utilizing Soft Power to Uplift Smaller Asian Nations examines how smaller states across Asia, often constrained by limited military and economic leverage, rely on diplomacy, cultural influence, and multilateral engagement to assert their agency. Delegates must examine how soft power can be strategically leveraged to amplify influence, safeguard sovereignty, and ensure more equitable representation without escalating regional tensions.
Topic B: Regulating Plastic Pollution in the Pacific Ocean addresses the accelerating environmental crisis in the Pacific, where plastic pollution continues to strain marine ecosystems, coastal livelihoods, and public health systems. With fragmented national responses proving insufficient in the face of transboundary waste flows, delegates will be challenged to design innovative solutions that balance economic development, environmental regulation, and global consumption patterns.
MEET THE CHAIR
MAYUKHA TALINKI
Dear Delegates,
My name is Mayukha Talinki and I’m ecstatic to be your chair for ESCAP at BruinMUN 34. I was born and brought up in West Hills, California and enjoy everything Los Angeles has to offer. I'm currently a third-year at UCLA majoring in Molecular Biology and Environmental Science and enjoy studying the intersection of medicine, policy, and sustainability. Beyond MUN, I’m involved in a multitude of policy initiatives, clinical and medical research, as well as consulting and environmental organizations on campus! I also love trying new restaurants, sunset drives, cafe hopping, and everything and anything crafty.
BruinMUN was the first conference I ever attended, and after being a MUN nerd for so long, it’s surreal that this will be my last BruinMUN! I’m incredibly grateful to have continued growing on the circuit through both staffing conferences and competing with UCLA’s travel team. Along the way, I’ve traveled to some incredibly fun conferences, served as the Under-Secretary-General of GA at BruinMUN 33, and most recently chaired the Unification of North America committee at LAMUN.
Throughout this journey, I’ve developed a deep appreciation for committees that tackle complex global challenges through sustainability and cross-cultural understanding, which makes me especially excited for this committee. ESCAP serves as a vital regional body focused on promoting cooperation among nations across Asia and the Pacific, and as geopolitical and environmental challenges continue to reshape the region, forward-thinking solutions that balance diplomacy, equity, and human-centered approaches are paramount.
I truly hope BruinMUN and this committee offer you the opportunity to gain a more global perspective and deepen your understanding of how regional cooperation can drive meaningful change. In the meantime, please don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions you may have, I’m always happy to help. I look forward to seeing you all and hearing the unique perspectives you bring to committee!
Sincerely,
Mayukha Talinki | Chair, ESCAP | BruinMUN 34
