Committee Profile

Members of the FRCA Council,

Five of your nations have just declared independence from the Mexican Empire under your leadership to form the Federal Republic of Central America (FRCA, for short). The newly formed Republic lacks organization and leadership, and you are left to build up a governing body for the region. Without protection from Spain or the Mexican Empire, as in previous years, your lands are vulnerable to outside attack, natural disaster, conflict, mismanagement of resources, and corruption. However, this new Republic possesses the opportunity to become the most powerful regional or even global hegemon.

In an attempt to make the FRCA a more powerful actor on the international stage, delegates should debate on topics such as broader governance, maintaining regional territory and power, as well as protecting borders from outside invaders. The FRCA contains a wide range of resources across its five nation states – Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Nicaragua, and Honduras – with extensive trade and communication channels, strong military resources and strategy, and being a large food production source for the rest of the world. But non-member states and organizations still play a crucial role in the future of this region.

Each delegate must consider their division of resources between annexing further territories around the region and focusing on building a strong, smaller state. What relations will you have with other states in the FRCA and nations outside of it? How will you align yourself with regional powers? Which one of you will lead the Republic?

The future of Central America is in your hands. Act now, or let the FRCA crumble into factions.

Chair Letter

Dear Delegates,

My name is Noah Sorger, and I am excited to be your chair for BruinMUN 33’s Federal Republic of Central America! It’s awesome that you all are starting your MUN careers in high school, and I am excited to make this a memorable conference through the adventures that lie ahead of us.

I am currently a sophomore at UCLA studying Political Science, with ambitions of becoming a lawyer. I’m a California native from up North, around 30 minutes south of San Francisco (go Giants). I enjoy playing and watching sports, lifting, nature, good music, and flying planes – I should have my pilot’s license by the time you’re reading this. Whether I end up as a lawyer, diplomat, or pilot down the line, I’ll hopefully make enough to have fun along the way.

I’ve been involved in public speaking since middle school when I joined the League of Creative Minds MUN program. After two years of competitions through LCM, I took my talents to my high school Mock Trial team, coming off COVID. For those of you who do Mock Trial, I was always a Defense Attorney, and I served as Captain and President of the team in my Senior Year, doubling our team’s membership and achieving our school’s best placing in history.

After high school, I wanted to get back into MUN and found the best place to do it here at UCLA. I joined in Winter Quarter of my freshman year, staffing LAMUN and traveling to earn my first gavel at UCBMUN. I’ll travel more this year and hopefully add to my resume! Outside of MUN at UCLA, I’m involved in the Business Law and Investing Society, Bruin Aviation, Sigma Nu, Intramural Sports, and interning at a local law firm.

I am incredibly excited to have the opportunity to chair this fantastic committee with Valerie and see the creative ways in which you delegates will rule over Central America. From external tension to internal prosperity, it will be your duty to secure the fate of this new state, or see it crumble and fend for yourselves. We cannot wait to see you all in November!

Sincerely,

Noah Sorger

CD Letter

Dear Delegates,

Hello! My name is Valerie Pham (she/her) and I’m so excited to be your Crisis Director for the Federal Republic of Central America! I’m an Economics and Political Science double major here at UCLA, where I plan to prepare for law school or a career in finance! I was born and raised in Oakland, but during my time at UCLA I’ve come to love it here in SoCal as well!

I joined Model UN at UCLA in my freshman year (I was a Speech & Debate kid in high school!), where I’ve been able to meet the most amazing people on the planet, improve my public speaking skills, and make countless memories in this club. I hope to make FRCA just as memorable as we debate ways to maintain (or destroy!) the fragile union of the Federal Republic of Central America.

Outside of Model UN, I love to sew and make jewelry in my free time! The arts have always been a big part of my life, as I’ve been painting since I was little and dedicated myself to fine arts in high school. While I don’t do as much painting now, I still love all forms of art! I played piano for nine years and have dabbled in photography, videography, knitting, crochet, lino printing, screen printing, graphic design, and more throughout the years. On the topic of art, I designed the BruinMUN 33 merch so please go buy it, or feel free to tell me if you like it!

Joining Model UN was one of the best decisions I’ve made and I’m so glad to be a part of this wonderful community! I can’t wait to see all the fruitful debate you all will participate in, and how you all decide to tackle external threats and internal unity, ultimately deciding the fate of the Federal Republic of Central America! We cannot wait to see you all in November!

Sincerely,

Valerie Pham
