Committee Profile
In this committee, we’ll be tackling two urgent issues that challenge global health and justice: counterfeit pharmaceuticals and facial recognition technology in policing. Both are continually raising big questions about crime prevention in today’s globally connected and high-tech world.
Fake medicines are flooding markets worldwide which puts millions of civilians at risk by undermining public health and strengthening powerful criminal networks. At the same time, police forces are rushing to use facial recognition technology faster than laws can keep up which raises serious concerns about privacy and fairness. These two topics reveal three key challenges. First, how criminals exploit weaknesses in global health systems to expand their reach. Second, how new technology can outpace regulation and threaten civil liberties. Third, how countries can work together better to protect both safety and human rights.
The Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice (CCPCJ) leads the UN’s efforts to shape criminal law and justice policies worldwide. Your job is to move beyond simple resolutions and build real solutions for the complex crime problems of our digital age. How will you shape the future of justice? It’s up to you.
Chair Letter
Hi Delegates!
My name is Sofia Bruno (she/her), and I’m so excited to be serving as your chair for the Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice (CCPCJ) at BruinMUN this year! I’m on the pre-law track and am currently majoring in Psychology, with plans to pursue a minor in Informational Media Studies at UCLA. Outside of academics, you can usually find me crocheting, playing random violin pieces, thrifting, or scouting out the best coffee shops within a bus-ride radius!
Before UCLA, I was deeply involved in MUN throughout high school. I joined as a freshman and eventually served as my club’s President during senior year. In addition, I served on the Secretariat of our home conference SFMUN for three years. MUN still continues to shape my interest in international cooperation and policy in our ever changing political landscape, so I’m excited to be guiding this debate from the other side of the dais!
This year’s CCPCJ topics focus on two major challenges: the global trade in counterfeit pharmaceuticals and the use of facial recognition technology in policing. Both raise complicated questions about how we apply legal frameworks to fast-changing issues. I’m especially interested in how delegates will approach the balance between innovation and accountability in law enforcement, and how international cooperation can help shape more effective and ethical policies. I’m also looking forward to hearing your thoughts on global equity, especially when it comes to access to safe medicine and how surveillance tools are used in different political systems.
Whether you’re new to MUN or have years of experience, I’m looking forward to hearing your ideas and seeing the debate unfold. If you have any questions before or during the conference, don’t hesitate to reach out. I'm here to help!
See you in November,
Sofia Bruno | Chair, CCPCJ | BruinMUN 2025
