Committee Profile

The average length of a song is 200 seconds. In those 200 seconds listeners are given a glimpse into the inner workings of their favorite artists and musicians. With the rise of technology, consumers have millions of songs ready to play at the tap of a button - but, what happens beyond those 200 seconds?

The Universal Music Group Board of Directors will reveal just that. Set in 2022, the Board of Directors is tasked with handling an ever-changing music landscape. More and more artists are being discovered through viral moments on TikTok, old artists are being reborn through syncs in popular TV shows and movies, and questions about whether or not artificial intelligence can be a musician continue to grow. The board will be tasked with balancing the old and the new, the popular and the viral, and the strong and the bold. Universal Music Group is the largest Music Group in the world, the best of the best. Now, it is up to the Board of Directors to face the music and fight to maintain their position at the top of the world.

Chair Letter

Hello, delegates and music lovers, welcome to Universal Music Group Board of Directors!

My name is Hazel Stocco (she/her) and I am a senior here at UCLA! Currently, I am studying a dual degree in statistics and data science and political science with a concentration in methods and models (I promise I didn’t enter UCLA with the intent of having the most words on my degree it just kind of happened). I am originally from a small town just outside of Chicago, Illinois (for those curious it’s Western Springs) and I have lived in Los Angeles all 4 years of my time at UCLA - although I will forever call Chicago my home.

I have been a part of UCLA Model United Nations for all 4 years of my time at UCLA, and this year marks my 7th year in Model UN in total (that makes me sound so old). In the last 4 years, I have had the joy of staffing BruinMUN as a crisis staffer, a CD, and now a chair! It is a very full circle moment for me and I am so excited to experience it with you. Outside of BruinMUN, I have also had the pleasure of serving on the UCLAMUN executive board for 3 years, serving roles such as Under-Secretary-General of Crisis at LAMUN (our college conference), Director-General of the club as a whole (shoutout Kamran my wonderful successor), and currently serving as the Director of Training for the club! Outside of MUN I am a craft lover, an employee at the research library on campus, and a scout looking for the best coffee shop in Los Angeles.

I am so excited to be chairing this committee as Universal Music Group was my first-ever internship 2 summers ago. What I learned and experienced through UMG gave me the passion and drive to pursue a career in international relations with statistics. This committee will be unique in the fact that you as delegates get to debate modern issues surrounding the world of music, all while getting to experience what goes on behind the scenes of your favorite artists and musicians. Universal Music Group is the largest music group in the world and it is an umbrella for many record labels including Capitol, Interscope, and Def Jam. With the rise of social media and streaming services, the general public now has more music at their fingertips than ever before. This committee will give you an inside understanding of a large international organization trying to keep up to date on trends, focus on technology, and at the end of the day produce some amazing music! As a delegate, you should expect this committee to be both fun and fast-paced - let your inner music lover out!

I am beyond excited to be serving as your chair for BruinMUN 31, as Model UN has been so influential in my life. It’s where I have met my closest friends (some of which are soon to be my roommates), my community, and my passion for my career goals. It’s crazy to think that in just 6 months my time as an undergraduate will come to an end, but I can honestly say that I would not be where I am today if it wasn’t for this club and the community it creates.

I hope that this weekend will give you guys just as much joy and excitement! If you have any questions, comments, or concerns please feel free to email umgbod@bruinmun.org!

Long Live Music,

Hazel Stocco | Chair | BruinMUN 31

CD Letter

Dear Delegates,

Hello! My name is Michael Griffin (he/him) and I am a second-year student majoring in Biology. In addition to being an active member of Model UN at UCLA, I also volunteer at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and I hope to soon begin training to earn my EMT certification. I plan on going to medical school after I graduate (to possibly become an anesthesiologist but we’ll see). In my fleeting moments of free time, I enjoy curating spotify playlists, taking nature photography, and endlessly browsing Google Maps creating fake adventures powered solely by public transit.

While biology is my passion, Model UN is my joy. I’m newer to MUN than most, having joined just a year ago at the beginning of my first year of college, but I assure you, I’m a fast learner! Model UN was always something I was interested in, but my high school did not offer it so I never got the chance to participate until I came to UCLA. I served as a crisis staffer for both BruinMUN 2022 and LAMUN XVIII last school year where I quickly discovered that I love everything crisis through my experiences staffing Historical UNSC and the Cabinet of Queen Liliʻuokalani.

As an avid music enjoyer and concert-goer, Universal Music Group provides a unique opportunity for me to explore the inner workings of the music industry. I am particularly interested in how the music industry can improve to better protect the rights of artists and consumers over the profits of megacorporations.

I joined Model UN because the prospect of debating historical and contemporary issues through an international lens greatly interested me. I stayed because of the wonderful community of people whose diverse backgrounds and interests create a fun and welcoming environment for everyone. I look forward to meeting you all at BruinMUN and I can’t wait to see the creative ways you overcome the obstacles we throw at you!

Best Regards,

Michael Griffin | Crisis Director | BruinMUN 31
