Committee Profile

The Disarmament and International Security Committee (DISEC) is also referred to as the First Committee, and it largely deals with issues related to international security, the regulation of weapons and arms, and other challenges that pose threats to peace. As the First Committee, it was created by The United Nations as a way to bring the world’s nations together to specifically protect global stability and security.

The regulation of cryptocurrency absolutely falls under this umbrella. The nature of cryptocurrency lends itself to many potential risks, including the fact that the risk of crypto asset losses can be immeasurably large. Hacking is an avenue through which cryptocurrency can be taken in extreme quantities, and it is becoming increasingly difficult to track those who engage in such activities. This does not even begin to take into account the difficulty of managing the rapidly expanding network of cryptocurrency markets, which can easily be taken advantage of to fund ventures that may pose threats to global security. Ensuring that the world begins to take the right steps towards the regulation of such fluid and shifting assets is imperative in making sure that they do not fall into wrong hands.

The small arms and light weapons (SALW) trade has had detrimental effects that are seen most prominently in nations and regions already ravaged by conflict. This is made all the more worse by the fact that terrorist and extremist groups are benefitting from and, at times, even heading the market for these weapons. Without an end to this proliferation, such groups are essentially given unfettered access to weapons that give them the ability to pose greater and greater threats to international security. It is your task as members of the First Committee to tackle these issues head-on at their root sources in order to ensure that they do not continue to escalate into matters

Chair Letter

Dear Delegates,

My name is Julia Tran and I will be serving as the Chair of this year’s Disarmament and International Security Committee at BruinMUN. Presently, I am a fourth year here at UCLA studying Anthropology and Digital Humanities in hopes that I will be able to combine my interdisciplinary knowledge with technical savvy in whatever career is in my future.

I started doing Model United Nations in my freshman year of high school for the same reason why many of you are here today: because of my wonderful family. In hindsight, I could not have been more grateful for their motivation and belief in me. MUN has given me some of my most cherished high school memories, taken me to so many different parts of the country and world, and provided me with a practical skill set that I still put to use today. Even past high school, the knowledge and experience that I gained in my time as a delegate continue to prove themselves valuable. Having attended BruinMUN myself as a high school delegate twice, I am all the more excited to welcome the 31st session of this conference with you all.

Ensuring that threats to international peace are quelled in a holistic manner is the mission of DISEC. Such threats can range from active explosives that continue to linger underground to weapons of mass destruction falling into the wrong hands. While in debate, it is thus important to remember the gravity the following topics hold in relation to the very glue holding our nations together. Ultimately, the First Committee faces issues that contain the potential to cause the destruction of our world as we know it, and it justly deserves a committee of delegates that are willing to overcome policy differences with grace to put the safety of civilization first.

It is my pleasure to welcome you all to DISEC here at BruinMUN. I hope that we can all partake in a weekend of engaging and fruitful debate; if there are any questions or concerns at all, please do not hesitate to reach out to me. I look forward to meeting all of you in person, and best of luck in your research!
