Letter From the Chair

Dear Delegates,

My name is Rachel DuRose and I will be serving as the Chair of the Disarmament and International Security Committee (DISEC). I am a junior here at UCLA with the Luskin School of Public Affairs and am majoring in Public Affairs with a minor in Global Health. With most of my time being taken up by Model United Nations, acting professionally in commercials and movies, and writing opinion articles for the Daily Bruin, I hope to find a career that combines my passion for international relations and my creative tendencies.

My Model United Nations career started my Freshman year of college. Unlike all of you lucky BruinMUN attendees, my highschool did not have a MUN program. I slowly worked my way through the facets of MUN at UCLA my first year; staffing logistics for BruinMUN, traveling to West Coast conferences and then being a crisis staffer for LAMUN, our collegiate conference. Last year I was the Director of Logistics for MUN and was part of the BruinMUN Secretariat. I expanded my knowledge as a delegate traveling to my first East Coast conference. This year I have the honor of serving as the Secretary-General for LAMUN XV. This committee will be my first time Chairing, so I hope you are all as excited as I am for the DISEC.

DISEC, or the First Committee of the United Nations General Assembly, is one of six main UN bodies.  This committee’s main goals include fostering international order and ensuring security across the globe. As a committee open to all 193 member states of the United Nations, DISEC is one of the largest BruinMUN committees and is sure to be filled with engaging debate and unique perspectives. With an agenda as important as upholding peace on this grand a scale, DISEC is guaranteed to be a lively and energetic assembly. Our two agenda items of preventing acts of chemical and biological warfare and the illicit production and distribution of small arms are topics relevant to today's society and I hope to hear thoughtful and respectful debate on these matters.

UCLA has for over a hundred years been the site of grand discoveries, and enthralling discussion. I am certain that the weekend of BruinMUN XXVII will only add to this history.

Welcome to the DISEC.
