It is my pleasure to welcome you to the Novice UNHCR at BruinMUN! My name is Ravid Reif and I am a senior at UCLA majoring in Political Science and Global Studies and pursuing a minor in French. I am originally from Israel, but currently live in Northern California.
I have been a part of Model United Nations since my freshman year of high school, and have competed in a fair share of high school conferences. As a member of Model United Nations at UCLA, I have served as a staffer for both BruinMUN and LAMUN, and Under-Secretary-General of General Assemblies for BruinMUN 2015 and LAMUN 2017. This year, I have the honor of being the Secretary-General for LAMUN 2018. In addition to staffing conferences, I am a part of the UCLA Travel Team and have attended UCBMUN, TrojanMUN, and HNMUN. MUN has been a huge part of my life, and I am excited to chair this committee at BruinMUN this year!
The plight of refugees has become increasingly concerning to the international community. The Syrian Refugee Crisis turned the world’s attention to the conditions refugees face during migration and settlement. But I want to turn this committee’s attention to less publicized refugee issues: Housing and Safeguarding Refugees of the Central African Republic and Ensuring the Rights of Female Refugees. Refugees of the Central African Republic were forced to flee following a surge of violence in December 2013. Since then, over 450,000 refugees have migrated to neighboring countries, straining the capabilities of these less developed countries. This committee will seek to address the conditions these refugees face both inside and outside the CAR to improve the lives of these forgotten people. Making up 50% of the refugee population, women are particularly vulnerable when displaced. The second topic regarding the rights of female refugees will work to address these vulnerabilities and ensure that female refugees receive the appropriate safeguards. As members of the UNHCR, you will be able to make impactful decisions regarding these complex issues. In your coming research, try to approach this matter from multiple angles to address the political, social, and humanitarian perspectives. I look forward to great debate, cooperation, and innovative solutions!
Please do not hesitate to contact me with questions. I look forward to meeting you all!
