Letter from the Chair

Dear Delegates,

My name is Shankar Chelliah and it will be my distinct pleasure to Chair the Novice UNHCR at BruinMUN 2016. Since 1951, the UNHCR has been the primary body of the United Nations to protect and support refugees. For this reason, we will be discussing the Syrian refugee crisis and the necessity for a more comprehensive mandate on the protection of Internally Displaced Persons.

As for me, I was born in Boston, and then spent the first 8 years of my life in Fremont, California, before moving to Bangalore, India to finish up the rest of my schooling. I moved back to the United States two years ago to begin pursuing a degree in Mathematical Economics at UCLA (currently in my junior year), a subject that I have always had an established interest in. I wish to go on to graduate school later on, and then enter the financial industry with specializations in Mathematics and Finance. I currently serve on the Executive Board at the MUN club at UCLA as the Director of Technology. Model United Nations has been an integral part of my entire high school experience ever since my first conference as a timid 10th grader. I have been to over ten MUN conferences as both a delegate and a dais member, and I wish to only increase this number over the next couple of years.

I cannot tell you enough about how excited I am to run this committee at BruinMUN 2016. I sincerely hope you enjoy committee as much as I did setting it up! With significant debate on worldwide conflicts, there seems to be no significant coverage on the protection and rehabilitation of millions of refugees across the world. The protection of refugees rests in your hands, and your actions will significantly affect their presence in today’s world. Good luck, and see you at the conference!

If you have any questions throughout the period of your research, please do not hesitate to reach out to me through email at

Yours sincerely,
Shankar Chelliah
