Dear Delegates,

It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to BruinMUN 2011’s UNDP! My name is Alex and I am your chair for this conference and I’m so excited! First, I would like to introduce myself. I am a third year Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology major and Pre-medical at UCLA from San Diego. I hope to get my degree in medicine after graduation and study oncology and possibly work with Doctors without borderes. At UCLA I also play Women’s Lacrosse and am a member of the Gamma Phi Beta International Sorority. This is my seventh year in Model UN and still going strong! I am the Chief of Staff for Model United Nations at UCLA and cannot wait to see all of you in committee!

When you arrive on the UCLA campus, I hope you embrace your country in the UN Development Programme. As a part of the UNDP, you will be charged with the education and development of people’s lives all over the world. It will be your responsibility to attack broad topics that affect every human on the planet: urban disaster preparedness and malnutrition.

With the recent destruction from the earthquakes in Japan and Haiti and the flooding in Louisiana, the need for urban disaster preparedness has become increasingly evident. Areas that have a large number of squatters or refugees can be more difficult to prepare for disasters because of inaccurate information. Streamlining communication and logistics in urban areas is only a part of saving lives of millions.

Every human on earth deals with sustaining their body with the proper nutrients. Without them, we cannot live. Malnutrition can have many different causes, including food production, financial difficulties, cultural practices, and natural disasters. Preventing and dealing with current malnutrition are two main issues to be dealt within this topic.

Again, I cannot wait to see you all in November! I hope you all attend the BruinMUN 2011 event on Facebook! If you have any questions at all don’t hesitate to contact me!

Sincerely,

Alexandria Jaksha
UNDP, Chair

Topic A: Urban disaster preparedness
In light of the recent earthquake in Japan and the constant threat of natural disasters, urban areas in danger can threaten the lives of a large population in a small area. Disaster preparedness could include everything from restructuring the emergency response team, to reconstructing cities to make them more response friendly, to introducing new building codes.

Topic B: Malnutrition
Every human on Earth needs food to survive. Sometimes, however, food is not readily available. Women, children, and families in some areas don’t have enough resources to put food on their table, let alone a roof over their head. Once these people can be kept alive, then their other problems can be addressed.
