General Assembly Plenary Committee

Dear Delegates,

It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to BruinMUN 2012’s General Assembly
Plenary. My name is Amanda Abel and I am in 4th year student at UCLA. I am double
majoring in International Development Studies and Political Science. My emphasis
is on the Middle East but I also studied abroad in Argentina and Peru. I have been
involved in Model United Nations since my freshmen year of high school and even
competed in BruinMUN 2006, 2007, and 2008. It is a dream come true to now be
able to chair this committee and hopefully help all of you develop as Model UNers.

Being the largest committee, General Assembly Plenary allows all countries to be
represented, creating a variety of policies and opinions. External sovereign debt has
recently become an important topic, especially in the aftermath and recovery from
the recession. Social media has also grabbed international attention during protests
and revolutions the past few years. The Arab Spring uprisings used social media to
publicize events and spread the word of organized protests. These two topics have
caused much debate and has finally hit the international stage in the United Nations.

I look forward to hearing all your solutions and mediating what is sure to be an
interesting debate. Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns.

Sincerely,
Amanda Abel
GA Plenary, Chair
