Letter from the Chair

Hola Delegates,

Welcome to the Cuban cabinet of 1959. My name is Aditya Deshpande and it is my distinct pleasure to welcome you to BruinMUN 2016, and to work with you as the chair for this committee.

Fidel Castro is one of the most fascinating personas of the 20th century, and has gained global popularity (or some would say notoriety) following several high profile incidents such as the Cuban Missile Crisis and the Bay of Pigs invasion. Having won his country back from the wealthy, corrupt aristocrats that acted as puppets of the United States, Castro has several grand plans for Cuba in 1959 - plans that he will rely on you, his cabinet, to bring to fruition. Set in the height of the cold war, this committee promises to keep you on your toes while giving you a rarely explored perspective on events that continue to shape American foreign and national security policy. Marcos and I are eager to recreate the environment of post-revolution Cuba for you and hope to witness engaging debate on the crises we will present.

When I am not serving the people of Cuba, I study Financial Actuarial Mathematics and Business Economics as a junior at UCLA, and plan on working in investment banking when I graduate. I started my MUN journey in high school in Mumbai 6 years ago, and continued it here at UCLA in various capacities. I was the Under-Secretary General for Crisis at BruinMUN last year, and serve as Secretary General for LAMUN 2017, UCLA’s annual college MUN conference. Having staffed, CD’d and been a delegate in several crisis committees over the years, I hope to put my experiences to good use in making this committee both fun and educational for you. I look forward to witnessing the incredible debate and legislation that I am confident you will bring to the table.

Letter from the CD

Hola Delegates,

Welcome to BruinMUN 2016! My name is Marcos Cardenas and I will be your Crisis Director for this committee. For those of you who have never done crisis before, just know that it is as exciting as it is challenging; however, I know all of you will do fine since you will all be well researched and very creative during this conference.

If you read Aditya’s Chair letter, then you know a little bit about Fidel and Aditya, so let me tell you a little about me. I am a senior Economics Major with a minor in Global Studies at UCLA, of course. I plan to either pursue a law degree, or a teaching credential after I graduate. I began MUN at my community college, College of the Canyons, and then was able to transfer to UCLA and also transfer into UCLA’s MUN team.

This will be my second time being a CD and my millionth time staffing in general. Aditya and I hope to use our many experiences to ensure that this committee is very fun and still educational. Just know that history doesn’t have to repeat itself, and in most crises, it does not.

Feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns at castro@bruinmun.org.
