2. Superbug Prevention

Letter from the Chair

Dear Delegates,
Welcome to BruinMUN 2018! My name is Ishaan Kapoor and I will be your chair for the committee, United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC). I'm excited to meet you all, and look forward to some great debate and problem solving. Currently, I'm a sophomore at UCLA, studying Mathematics of Computation. Before that, I grew up in a small town outside Toronto, called Richmond Hill, and finished up school in New Delhi, India. My journey with Model UN started back in India, in eighth grade. Fast forward to now, and I've done a bunch of conferences across the world and each one has had something exciting I took back from it.

This committee is a body focused on solving the world's issues regarding drugs and crime. For millennia, drugs and crime have been intertwined with each other, with possession, usage and dealing, punishable by jail time in most countries. Today, we see new solutions for a problem that's plagued us for millennia. Countries are using data and science to mitigate damage and rehabilitative methods to reduce drug abuse. Regardless, the use of the most dangerous class of drugs, opioids, has only been on the rise. We also see new problems that arose from what we thought would be solutions. The threat of a superbug-bred by years of lax antibiotic use, is imminent. A new bacteria with the potential to have devastating effects. We need not only inventive solutions, but preventive systems and rock solid implementation strategies.

One of the things I'd like to stress about your experience at BruinMUN, is have fun! MUN is about learning about important world issues, being aware and working on implementable solutions, but after all MUN is great way to make some really great friends and shape yourself into great young leaders. History usually dictates that the world's problems are solved by the youth, and that's you! So don't be afraid to think outside the box, try exciting implementations of new ideas and most of all don't be afraid to take risks and give it your all this weekend! I look forward to committee and meeting you all!
