Alliance of Small Island States

The Alliance of Small Island States, commonly referred to by the acronym AOSIS, is a syndicate of nations that includes both low-lying coastal countries and small island nations. With members and observers from all the oceans and regions of the world, AOSIS aims to deal with and ameliorate the challenges and issues that often face islands and coastal areas. The concerns that AOSIS membership face are unique in nature — usually having to do with the impact of external factors, such as the environment or the economic climate, on the complex culture, and character of island and coastal regions. The membership of AOSIS is diverse with members and observers belonging to nations and areas of both socio-economic prosperity and disparity — but it cannot be ignored that all the members of AOSIS are joined in consolidating the voices of Small Islands Developing States (SIDS). The nations that form AOSIS allows for the creation of support networks between island nations — making it possible for island and coastal countries to work with one another to achieve goals and initiatives. The work done by AOSIS serves to benefit all member states, and overall the global population.
