Letter from the Chair

Dear Delegates,
Welcome to the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) at BruinMUN 2018! My name is Oran Farkas and I am beyond excited to serve as your chair during this committee. I look forward to meeting each of you soon as well as listening to your debate on these very interesting and imperative topics concerning children worldwide. Before anything else, here is a bit of information about me. I am a second-year student here at UCLA pursuing a degrees in Physics and Political Science as a double major. On campus, I work in the Office of the External Vice President, the home of student advocacy on campus, and of course Model United Nations. I have been involved in MUN since my junior year of high school. While at UCLA, I have staffed both BruinMUN and LAMUN (our college conference) as well as competing on our travel team. This will be my first time chairing while in college and I am excited to share that journey with all of you.

MUN has been an integral part of my life over the past few years and has helped me develop my skills of argumentation and public speaking as well as helping to drive my passion for politics, advocacy, and solving both local and global problems through policy. I hope MUN does the same and hope that during the committee you grow your skills and learn about solving problems
from a global perspective.

I am extremely excited to be chairing UNICEF as its role is often taken for granted within the United Nations. While most people have heard about UNICEF and some of the work they do, it is often seen as just a global organization through the United Nations which plays a role similar to a nonprofit. This is true in a sense, but during this committee, each of you will get to play a role that defines the way in which this organization will solve two problems that are facing society, access to resources for children refugees and the protection of children with disabilities. These two topics are both topics that I am passionate about as they are both I have done work
with in the past. I look forward to seeing your solutions to the way in which UNICEF should tackle these problems.

If you have any questions regarding the committee, BruinMUN, UCLA, or even physics or politics, feel free to contact me. I wish you the best in preparing for committee and I look forward to meeting you.

Best,
Oran Farkas | Chair
