Letter from the Chair

Dear esteemed delegates:

Welcome to the Fourth Committee of the UN General Assembly, the Special Political and Committee (SPECPOL), at BruinMUN 2018! My name is Rachel Lee and I am beyond excited and proud to serve as your chair. Throughout this committee, we will be introduced to various issues and topics that affect our world today and aim to work collaboratively towards creative, diplomatic solutions. Whether you’re a first-time delegate or have had experience competing in the MUN circuit, I would love for this committee to be a truly engaging and fun learning experience for novice and veteran delegates alike.

A little bit about myself: I am a fourth-year UCLA student double-majoring in Psychology and Communications and minoring in Entrepreneurship. I’ve been involved with public speaking and policy debate for over ten years in high school and I transitioned into competing in the Model UN circuit with UCLA this past year. Outside of Model UN, I am passionate about my pursuits in social activism and entrepreneurship. Fun fact: my twin sister and I have been featured in national news outlets such as Teen Vogue and NowThis for our legislative work! On my spare time, I enjoy modern dance, knitting, being involved with UCLA Radio, exploring LA, and working with nonprofits.

With regards to BruinMUN 2019, I am especially excited for this committee because the issues that this body discusses are becoming increasingly relevant and salient today in our modern world. The protection of internet freedom, governance, and access to information is crucial in becoming aware and responsible global citizens. The information that we take in forms our perceptions, ideas, and beliefs about the world which in turn have significant implications on how both we as citizens and world leaders interact with one another. Due to the nuanced views of each individual nation, internet freedom, “fake news”, and censorship have become trending issues in our political sphere. In addition, the colonization, militarization, and peaceful exploration of outer space is an important discussion for the future of humankind, as we will also be addressing issues related to sustainable development and disaster management. As we explore new grounds and unfamiliar arenas in our modern world, cooperation amongst actor nations is fundamental. I look forward to a weekend of engaging debate and innovative solutions.

In the meantime, please do not hesitate to reach out to me if you have any questions regarding the committee. I’m excited to see where you all take this committee and my hope is that each of you come out of this committee with more knowledge and skills to discuss some of the most pertinent issues facing our world today.

Best,
Rachel Autumn Lee | Chair
