Letter from the Chair
Welcome to the ECOSOC.
Food production is at an all-time high. Global peace levels are unprecedented. Technology has never before had so profound an impact over human life. The world, all in all, is working fine. Yet, 1 in 9 people in the world starve. Why?
My name is Niraj Mehta and I am your chair for ECOSOC at BruinMUN, 2016. I am a 3rd Year Chemical Engineering Major here at UCLA. My interests include aircraft, science and philosophy. I have been a part of MUN at UCLA for 3 years now. Over the years through MUN I have witnessed some very fine debates, read some brilliant resolutions and heard some wonderful monologues. Sometimes, I have thought, if the United Nations actually worked nearly as well as some MUN committees do, the world would indeed be a much better place. I believe that conferences such as these can be brilliant learning opportunities. Therefore, I have made every attempt to provide you with the flexibility to turn this simulated debate into a learning opportunity for all: you and me.
Having pondered over the issue of widespread hunger for quite some time now, I have come to realize that the problem is very complicated yet very interesting. The global community has, in the past, prevented nuclear Armageddon and cured pandemics. Yet widespread hunger, supposedly a much simpler problem, persists. Why? In this committee, I want you to deliberate over this question. In particular, I have chosen two topics that I believe are promising solutions to the problem at hand: i) Implementing the Right to Food and ii) Biotechnology in Agriculture. While discussing these topics, you are encouraged not just to reiterate the positions of the countries you represent, but also to consider your position from a holistic perspective: the ultimate goal of this committee is to eliminate world hunger. Be as reasonable as possible as you justify how your position takes us closer to achieving this goal.
I look forward to hearing innovative views and reading well thought-out resolutions in this committee. I reiterate: I believe this topic is multi-faceted and genuinely challenging. There are a lot of sides to take in debates involving these topics. Therefore, I expect high-quality debate from you, delegates. On my side, I assure you my complete effort in making this committee experience as pleasant and enjoyable as possible.
Once again, welcome and good luck.
