Chair: Shankar Chelliah
USG: Benjamin Lee
Topic A: Financing the battle against climate change
Topic B: Combating the global wage gap
Committee Type: Dual Delegation
My name is Shankar Chelliah and it will be my distinct pleasure to Chair the ECOSOC at BruinMUN 2017. Since 1945, the ECOSOC has been the primary body of the United Nations to coordinate the economic, social, and related work of 15 UN specialised agencies, their functional commissions and five regional commissions .
As for me, I was born in Boston, and then spent the first 8 years of my life in Fremont, California, before moving to Bangalore, India to finish up the rest of my schooling. I moved back to the United States two years ago to begin pursuing a degree in Economics with a minor in Global Studies at UCLA (currently in my junior year), a subject that I have always had an established interest in. I wish to go on to graduate school later on, and then enter the investment banking industry. I currently serve on the Executive Board at the MUN club at UCLA as the Director of Training/ Head Delegate. Model United Nations has been an integral part of my entire high school experience ever since my first conference as a timid 10th grader. I have been to over ten MUN conferences as both a delegate and a dais member, and I wish to only increase this number over the next couple of years.
I cannot tell you enough about how excited I am to run this committee at BruinMUN 2016. I sincerely hope you enjoy committee as much as I did setting it up! With significant debate on worldwide conflicts, there seems to be no significant coverage on the financing of climate change policies and the dramatic increase in the global income gap. The protection of the world’s environment and income equality rests in your hands, and your actions will significantly affect their future in today’s world. Good luck, and see you at the conference!
