Letter from the Chair
My name is Gilma Bernal and I am truly honored to be your chair for the 3rd Social, Cultural and Humanitarian Committee for BruinMUN 2016. I am a senior graduating in 2017 with a Major in Psychology and a Minor in Education. I am involved in a few campus organizations, notably Model UN, and the student government of UCLA, USAC, as Campus Climate Director for the undergraduate student body. After graduation, I plan on serving two years aiding underserved communities in the States. As you can tell, the Protection of Humanitarian Workers Abroad is a topic that I hold dearly, as it is something that has affected many humanitarian aid workers, who ultimately gave up their lives while attempting to protect and preserve the rights of others.
I hope that you come well-researched and ready to engage in the topic of Human Rights, to discuss, debate and most importantly, compromise. Know your country's stance, know which countries agree with you, and those that disagree with you. Model UN is a place to let discussion and ideas flow freely, a place where young delegates such as yourself have the opportunity to make real world impact and change, and as such, I expect there to be respect for the conversations you are having, the people who you speak with, always maintaining decorum. Do not be afraid to speak when you have a point to make, and do not be afraid to speak frequently. I hope that this committee is lively, engaging, and effective.
That being said, keep in mind that these topics do not have clear solutions; UN leaders and politicians themselves struggle with coming up with the correct answers. Trust in your research, in yourself, and you will find that dialogue in committee will occur naturally and committee will progress towards a resolution.
I am excited to see you all in debate, and I trust that our committee will be one of great conversation, striving to do the most of all things: protecting and preserving the human rights of all individuals.
